Subway Art

Canadian House & Home, October 2010 issue

H&H blog, decorating trends

They're a nice alternative to black and white photos with loads of graphic appeal but do you think we'll still see them in home decor in a few years? Hmmm.

For my Canadian guests, you might be more inclined to add them to your walls if they referenced a Canadian city. Well, you're in luck - look what I found!

What do you think of subway art? Trendy or here to stay?

Let's get started!

When starting a project with a client I believe a design board becomes a key component of how the design process begins. Essentially, it helps the client visualize how the space can come together including; furniture, fabric, art, accessories and colours. For me, it helps solidify the clients design style and feeling they’re hoping to achieve within their home.

It also helps the client get excited about the possibilities – as did my client from the design boards I provided for the main floor of her home. She prefers 'new' traditional style and was looking for a touch of pretty, here’s a peek into this project…

And, now, we wait. We wait for the items to arrive and once they do, I'll be happy to show you the 'before' and 'after' pictures!
Have a great Tuesday!

Classic Canadiana

For while I’ve been undecided if I love it or hate it but I finally caved and bought one. Meet Fred Jr. from Cardboard Safari.

Passe or not, I’m happy I bought him. We all laughed when we saw him all put together - thanks B! I selected the moose mainly because it seemed like a nice iconic thing to do. For now, he sits in our home office but we'll see where he ends up as time goes on.

On that note, somehow designer Candice Olsen worked Fred into a bedroom redesign - it looks nice but that's definitely not for me.

Wallpaper vs. Stencil Art

In my Wallpaper Artwork post earlier this week, see it here, I mentioned I'm considering tweaking the idea by using a stencil instead of wallpaper. Here's a look at the wallpapers vs. stencil options I'm liking at the moment.

Wallpapers Options

treetops - jocelyn warner

spellbound - schumacher

modern trellis - schumacher

starburst - gramham & brown

lacework - amy butler via graham & brown

Stencils Options

missing link - cutting edge stencils

For beautiful stencil walls and a tutorial on how to, go here and here. For a online tv tutorial on how to make wallpaper artwork go here (wait out the tour of Jennifer Ferreiras' apartment).

A couple of things I need to keep in mind when choosing which route to go - the drapery and coffee table are staying everything else can be replaced - here's a snapshot of my living room today. The wall colour could also change, today, it's Alexandria Beige from Benjamin Moore. Oh, I should mention, I would love, love, love a Madeline Weinrib area rug, you can read all about it here, but I'm thinking it's not going to happen unless I source out a sale.

So what do you think - wallpaper or stencil? Happy Weekend!

Wallpaper Artwork

Last week Shannon at What's Up Whimsy posted this picture from designer Summer Thornton and I was instantly hooked. Read the full post and see all the pictures here.

For awhile now I've been admiring extra large wallpaper artwork over the sofa and started a collection of inspirational photo's. I've been thinking of this for my living room as a way to add a touch of drama and colour, we also have high ceilings so I think it would be great. Although, I'm considering tweaking it some - how about using a stencil instead of wallpaper? I'm undecided.

Finally, here's the round up of inspirational photo's I've collected for this DIY art project (not planned for anytime in the near future but I'm excited about it!) First up, the photo that started the idea...

Some other finds...

This champagne colour chair would look stunning as an accent chair or if you're lucky enough to get 6, it would be fabulous around a dining table!

How about this as an entryway console table? It would also look fabulous in glossy black!

Art / Picture Wall Done!

I promised I would and so I did... the art / picture wall is done. I'm happy with the results but I'm especially happy that the boys have noticed.

The frames are from Costco, 2 in a pack for $22.00 (3 different size matts included), and the 'I *Heart* You' print was a gift to B for Fathers Day. I purchased it, along with a 'Keep Calm and Carry On' print from Pink Peacock Paperie.

Psst... if you're wondering how I decided on a layout, read all about it here.

Laundry Room Update

I've been looking for baskets for my laundry room for some time now, while IKEA has several to choose from I didn't want to spend 14.99 each given I wanted six of them. So I've been waited for sales to pop up and lucky me, BouClair has a 25% off sale happening now. Here's what I bought last night - what do you think?

Here's a few pictures from their display shelves. Their selection of home decor items has been improving over the years...

rue is live!

The premiere issue of rue magazine launched today! I love how they’re mixing up stylish living, featuring stories such as; 'Screen Revival' and 'Private Life of a Legend' representing an almost 'over the top' design as well as ‘everyday’ style with features like 'Bright Light' or 'Founding Femme'. It’s so nice to see the variety... here are my favorites!

Congratulations rue, I'm looking forward to more!

Stylish Shelves... in dining room.

You wouldn't think of putting bookshelves in the dining room but why not have the room play double duty? Especially if your style is more casual, maybe this is just the ticket to enjoy the room more than just on special occasions!
