Our Summer List

In the same way we create a list of all the things we want to do during the holiday season, there’s a separate list for summer. Am I right? Last summer was the first summer we created a summer list that incorporated get-outside adventures for all of us. With our boys ages four and two, we’re beginning the family fun day trips B & I enjoyed as kids. Needless to say, our list isn’t complicated but is full of family fun that creates memories, and savours the warmest months of the year. Here’s our summer list so far…

Go strawberry picking.

Make strawberry jam.

Pitch a tent in the backyard.

Watch a movie outside.

Have a picnic in the park.

Visit the Toronto Zoo.

Visit Centreville.

Dine al fresco as often as we can; with B, with family, with friends.

Have a summer potluck with friends.

Take a nap outdoors.

but, most importantly we will…

enjoy the moment

Do you have a summer list? I would love to hear all about it -

Canadian Design Bloggers Meetup

The past Saturday a slue design bloggers and interior designers came together for the second Canadian Design Bloggers Meetup. It was great catching up with a few blogging friends and of course, meet with some new ones. I had a fabulous time and played paparazzi for my good friend Staci from Inspired by Life. Fun!

Vie of Verdigris Vie and Daniella of Dress, Design & Decor outdid themselves once again. Ikea, Delta Faucet, CIL and more – all sponsors and all so generous, our gift bags were full! The very talented Tommy Smythe was our key speaker and his chat was both humorous as it was inspirational. The trendy Brassaii Restaurant and Lounge downtown Toronto was our venue and it was fabulous!

A few blogger friends… Staci, Sarah, Christine and me. It was also great catching up with Jennifer, Christine, Vanessa, Kerry, Janice and Lisa (from a far!).IMG_2829

One of my new friends… the ever talented Meredith Heron of Meredith Heron Design. Check out her website for fabulous design eye-candy, and you can read all about her new design projects via her blog here.IMG_2833

I also met with the talented Jennifer Brouwler of Decor by Jennifer, her new website (& blog) is launching soon so keep your eyes open for what’s yet to come. Also great meeting with Renee, Jo, and Rhona from Covet Garden just to name a few. Seems like the evening went by so quickly, hardly enough time to meet and chit-chat with everyone.

The Brassaii Restaurant and Lounge was the perfect spot for the design enthusiasts bunch we are, loved it! Love the red doors against the old brick with hits of black - not to mention the lighting in the entryway. The interior was just a fabulous with exposed painted brick, concrete and natural woods through out.IMG_0820

Thanks to all the sponsors there was no shortage of food or drinks. It felt as though the food kept coming, and it was all delicious! I loved how it was served. I want to host a get-together were its all about appetizers, and I want to plate it like this – CDBM2011 @ Brassaii Restaurant

I had a great time, so happy to have reconnected with friends and made new ones. All in all, it was a great event and I’m looking forward to the next one! To check out everyone who was there go here, to be in the know for the next event go here  or follow via twitter by going here.

Room Envy {Living Room}

Ever since seeing this room back in March, it’s had a permanent place in my mind, filed under ‘Dream House’. This living room is perfection to me. I absolutely love it – all of it! I especially love the neutral palette, all the gorgeous furnishings, fabrics and the art work. Did I say I love all of it? Swoon.

This house belongs to Sue from The Zhush, the entire house is actually insanely gorgeous and was recently featured in Cottages & Gardens. Every single photo made my jaw drop. If you haven’t seen this before, you probably want to go here… enjoy!

Fire Up The Grill For Father's Day

Are you ready for Father’s Day? Blair is king of the grill in our house, but this Father's Day we’ll give him a break by treating him to his favourite meal. Here’s a few of our favourites from our go-to BBQ book. I’m not sure what we’ll make yet -

fathers day

I’m looking forward to firing up our new Blue Ember 3 Burner Propane Gas Grill, courtesy of The Home Depot. Can’t wait to give you the full review as the summer progresses, but so far it’s been great.

If you follow me on Facebook or Twitter – I hope you have enjoyed the free printables I’ve been sharing. If you missed it, feel free to go here, here, here and here. I have a few printed already, love the retro stickers. Happy Weekend, and enjoy Father’s Day for all you dads out there!

Fresh Home Magazine

This past weekend the summer issue of freshHOME magazine landed on my doorstep. While an afternoon nap is never a possibility anymore, given my 4 and 2 year old boys, I was instantly captivated by this the front cover. scan0199

An indoor hammock, how cool is that? Perfect for a cottage or enclosed porch. I love how it’s unexpected - instantly creating a feeling of unwinding and relaxation. I love it!

Love this idea of camp-style bedroom. The old painted spindle beds, mismatched bedding, grommet drapery panels hung from rope, soft pastel colours are all calling out to me.

Lastly, I love how this burlap upholstered daybed turns guest room with this no-sew window treatment (hung by tension rods) and this absolutely amazing girly-girl sleep sack - I would love one.

These were the images I was drawn to, but freshHOME was filled with tons of great do-it-yourself summer ideas and I might just try one this summer, how exciting! More importantly, since this magazine was a pleasant surprise, I wonder if more will be arriving in the coming months? Until then, their website is a new find for me too so pop over here or check out their blog here, when you have a few minutes… happy reading!

Interior Design Trend | Chunky Wood Tables

This post comes courtesy of Design Shuffle, an awesome social media site promoting interior designers and fabulous interior design ideas from around the world.

Hi!  My name is Lindsey and I'm a guest blogger for  I am so lucky that I get to write on interior design and home décor topics every day.  It's my dream job.  I have a special fondness for Chesterfield sofas, Eames chairs and the color yellow.  I love visiting Desire to Decorate because Wendy has such a great eye for really pretty designs.  And I'm super excited to share this post with you on an interior design trend:  chunky wooden dining room tables.  Enjoy!

One of the trends occurring in the interior design/home décor world right now is rustic and oh-so-chic.  It's the unexpected pairing of chunky wood dining room tables with mid-century modern or contemporary dining chairs.  It's one of my favourite interior design ideas because it combines the modernity of seating with the antique/rustic quality of a solid oak, teak or pine, dining room table. As you'll see, the following pairings are ridiculously gorgeous and easy to replicate.  So if you need a bit of inspiration to get a leg up on this trend, take a look at these images.

 Wooden Dining Tables

There's something very masculine about this dining room design.  A wooden table with chunky legs and a matching set of leather dining chairs looks so clean and rugged against the glossy pairing of white and black.

S-Chairs by Verner Panton look right at home with this wood slab dining room table.  If you're crafty (or know someone who is), you can easily replicate this look with a few slabs of repurposed wood.

Wooden Dining Tables

This is from the home of fashion designer, Jason Wu.  A wood table pairs beautifully with chic black chairs and a lovely chandelier.  Come to think of it, the shapeliness and curvature of the wood and chairs sort of mimic one another. Do you agree?

This table isn't quite so chunky.  Though the table is marble-topped, the legs are rough and unfinished.  Paired with white Henry Bertoia chairs in a very rustic space, the result is picturesque, yet stylish.

In this eat-in kitchen design, the table is super chunky, especially in the legs.  Yet for some reason, it looks so pretty paired with a set of black leather dining chairs. If you're looking to recreate this look, there are two ways to go about it.  You can choose a chunky table that's been smoothed down, or even veneered, or you can go for something rougher, repurposed and unfinished.  Paired with chic, modern dining room chairs, the look is sure to be fabulous either way!

I’m thrilled Lindsey wanted to guest post today, love this post. I’ve always loved these natural wooden beauties,  I’ve had my eye on one from Urban Tree Salvage for a while now. Thank you for joining us Lindsey, and I hope you will come again. Be sure to head on over to to get your daily dose of interior design ideas!

{09.06.11} My Birthday

Yes, it’s my birthday. I look forward to celebrating with family tonight, hopefully with cake – minus the candles. This last year has been filled with so many wonderful experiences, opportunities and changes, and I’m excited for the year ahead. I’m also so thankful for my lovely family and friends, thank you for all you do and for the birthday celebrations. This weekend I plan to celebrate with my wonderful husband Blair, perhaps we’ll order dessert first -

Outdoor Living | The Perfect Pergola

If you have been with me since last summer, you know that we have yet to do anything with our backyard because we will be putting in a pool in the coming years. While we have the backyard drawings done and the timeframe for the project nailed-down (given the age of our boys), that doesn’t keep us from longing for it now.

This past weekend we finally had the chance to dine outdoors (we usually do in the summer), and I found myself tossing out the pool design for a plan that’s doable today. I found myself day dreaming of beautiful backyards, complete with; semi-mature trees, an array of colourful annuals, an outdoor dining area along with an outdoor living room. One thing I keep chatting up is having a pergola in the design - I love them. I especially love them equipped with lighting…

Banana Bread Bliss

banana bread

Usually the banana bunch is completely devoured by Fridays, but not this week. Here’s what I made this morning. I didn’t include the walnuts or chocolate chips simply because my little man Liam doesn't like them. This is my go-to banana bread recipe and it’s absolutely delish, only crumbs remain by day 2. Here’s the recipe so you can try it yourself… enjoy!

What you will need:

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup bananas (3 very ripe bananas)
  • 1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Cream butter and sugar together. Beat in eggs one at a time, beating until smooth. Add mashed bananas and blend in. In second bowl, stir flour with baking soda, baking powder, salt and nuts. Add banana mixture, stirring only to moisten.

Transfer to 9 x 5 x 3 inch loaf pan. Bake in 350 degree oven for about an hour, until toothpick comes out clean. Let stand 10 minutes. Remove from pan and place on cake rack to cool.

Banana Chocolate Chip Bread: Add 3/4 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips.

Happy Weekend!

Room Envy {Principle Bedroom}

I have loved this bedroom by Jamie Herzlinger for a while now. We have yet to decorate our bedroom and when I dream about how I want it to feel and look, this snapshot captures it perfectly. Jamie Herzlinger Master Bedroom

Crisp white with creams, gorgeous murano glass chandelier, overall, just the right balance of formality to casualness - what’s not to love? To me this bedroom is classic and timeless… perfect.
