Our Backyard Retreat :: Inspiration

It’s been all pool talk around our house lately. Our pool or not to pool conversations have come along way since 2010. I’m happy to share that it’s official, and pool it is.

We’ve spent countless hours talking about size, steps, liners and landscaping. Here’s a look at our initial sketch…

hicken pool sketch

… since drafting this version, we’ve added more trees but never the less, this is where we started.

It was meetings with a handful of pool companies; Poolside, Pools for Homes, Jameson Pool & Spa, Pioneer Pools and Gib-San Pools and landscaping companies; Heart’s Content Gardens and Wade’s Landscaping Creations that really helped us refine our vision. The folks at the highlighted companies have been spectacular; we are well versed in pool and landscaping options now. We are doing all our homework now for a spring dig date.

As in any design project, it all starts with inspiration and needless to say, lately I’ve been dreaming, and pinning, about what I want our backyard retreat to feel like. As in most design projects, starting with the big pictures always helps guide decisions and helps keep you focused. Clean lines, natural stones with tailored low maintenance greens and sun shades bring both B and I a sense of calm. Here’s a peek at the backyard feel we are favouring {with more grass}…

the Morris Hanging Lantern

Anyone else noticing this lantern popping up in designs recently? It’s the works of Suzanne Kasler.

I love lanterns, however, this option seems more industrial looking, with an gothic twist almost. I think it’s a nice alternative to a pendant for a mainly masculine room, but it’s still not making my {love it!} category. Never the less, here’s a round up for your visual pleasure – enjoy!

Fifty Shades of Grey

Ok, I’ve joined the ‘grey’ fan club. My husband bought me the trilogy ebook for my birthday back in June. I really only started last week, but I’m through Fifty Shades of Grey, and I’m on Fifty Shades Darker. Admittedly, I’ve stayed up late too many nights reading… and yes, I’m loving the book(s).

Fifty Shades of Grey

I was at a pool party last Friday, it was all but hour in before the first mom asked if anyone was reading “fifty shades”. From there, we talked about the book for about 20 minutes… surely, they bought the book over the weekend.

I can’t believe all the hype surrounding this erotic page turner. It’s bizarre. For me, it’s been a while since I’ve been wrapped up in a book, so I’m enjoying the book and enjoying book reading again. Yes, the story is intriguing, but really, it’s simple, making it a great summer read for me. It’s bothersome that the chapters really connect, and before you know it, it’s 1:30 AM!

For excerpts of the book, check out the authors website, E L James. If you’re a fan, let it be known by joining the other 300,000 fans on their Facebook page.

Anyone else reading Fifty Shades of Grey? Do tell, or tell of another great summer read you’re onto -

Pattern Play Floors

For a long time now, I’ve been admiring flooring that have a little pattern play. While I think it’s a fabulous way to add drama to a space, I’m hesitant – mainly, for fear that in time it would become tiresome. Nevertheless, these patterned flooring tease my conservative side.

I could be swayed with a subtle pattern like this though -

That said, the thought of bold pattern flooring for a bathroom really gets me excited.

Drape-less Windows

I’m a believer that adding drapery to windows really adds yet another dimension to a rooms overall look and feel, but recently, I’ve taken note of the naked window.

I think these are great examples where the windows were meant to remain uncovered and their exposure becomes a part of the interior design. What do you think?

Boyfriend Jeans Round Up

Lately I’m coveting boyfriend jeans. I especially love when they are worn with a tailored shirt or ultra feminine blouse, and heels are a must. Sadly, this fashion look is out of my comfort zone, seeming a little too messy for me, but I would love to try it. Here’s a few boyfriend jean ensembles I like…

Elephants :: I see Elephants.

Anyone else notice that elephant accents are making a big impact in home decor lately? Funny how when you spot something once, you continue to see it over and over again from then on. I remember seeing elephant accents in Lonny Magazine months ago and since, they continue to pop up. I like how people are bringing elephant accents out from the nursery and into main living spaces. I love this collection of elephant inspiration… and, I hope you do too!

And, here’s my little elephant, a hand me down from my mom. We have two and they always sat in our family room as a kid. Today, this one sits in my entryway and the other in my living room.

I love the mini elephant flower pot – a touch of playfulness to a line up of glass vases. What do you think of the elephant trend?
