Sarah 101 {Contemporary Living}

This week’s case study was an open concept entryway, living and dining room in an overall small space. Space planning, smaller scale furniture and storage were on the priority list for this long and narrow room.

While the reveal really showcased mid century modern style, the drapery, woven blinds, grass cloth wallpaper, brass pendant and upholstered banquette and chairs in the dining area brought in warmth and contemporary touches.Sonia's living room a E7

Our first house was 1600 square feet so I know first hand how challenging space planning and finding the right size furniture is for a small living space.

The layout and smaller scale furniture Sarah chose for this space was ideal. The two area rugs sewn together was a great idea to get the perfect size area rug at a lower price point and it really helped to define the living room from entryway and the dining area. The round tables kept the home owner’s two year old son in mind as did the storage cubes but the added bonus, the storage cubes double as extra seating or table when needed. Good thinking Sarah!

3 Take A Ways. To make a small living space appear larger, pull some of the furniture away from the walls. Scale down upholstery and opt for chairs as room dividers. When working with vintage pieces, chose fabrics that are well suited for the item. Repetition of pattern, an age old design technique; think one strong piece paired with other subtle touches scattered through the space.

Great summary Wendy. I loved the bold drapery fabric and the light fixture from SNOB.

Great summary of the episode Wendy. I really enjoyed this space, with the exception of the light up art- just didn't fit in my opinion. Loved the lantern, mid century furnishings, pendant light and overall palate.
