Sheers As Window Treatments

When I sought out sheers as part of our window treatments for our living room and dining room, eight years ago, no one was really doing them. Recently I’m seeing more and more people use them again.

When it comes to transparency some people feel that less is more.

I don’t understand sheers alone for a bedroom. I hope there’s more to these pictures that we’re seeing…

Sheers as a layered window treatment? A must for bedrooms.

And while I thought sheers where really only in white or cream then I found these two photos… perhaps these drapery panels are linen.

Interior Design Show 2013 {IDS13}

It was design week last week with the Interior Design Show, IDS13, back for its 15th annual show. The show kicked off with the Thursday night opening party and continued over the weekend. In recent years I only went to the party however, this year I did the party and trade day on the Friday. Saturday & Sunday were open to the public.

IDS13 Recap Desire to Decorate

Before I dive into this post too much, I have to say that I think IDS has its work cut out for themselves. Year after year, they need to impress what I think is a hard to wow design crowd. Without doubt this year they would impress the public, but the design industry not likely – or at least, not as much. That said, this years show was better than last.

My suggestions? I think Thursday and Friday need to better target the design industry. The goal for these two days should be all about engaging, providing insight and inspiration for the already well-versed designer and design enthusiasts. Why not bring international renown key note speakers to the table and kick off trade day with a general opening session? Our seasoned local designers would be sure to listen in if the scope was outside Canadian designers. How about hosting a handful of round-table discussions that bring together local industry experts & manufactures and / or design experts & media for a loosely structured networking and collaboration discussions? This allows for the community as a whole to connect and strive beyond the today. Again, for the public they impress but for the design community, I think they need to step up their game.

Okay, moving on.

This year I was asked to participate in a walk around hosted by the fabulous folks at Masco Corporation  along with their blog Beige is Dead. I can't say enough about this group and the round up of media, design experts and design bloggers who walked together. All in all, an interesting experience. If you follow me on instagram see all the insta-photos via #IDS13walk.

Here's a look at some of my favourites from the show...

IKEA always impresses at IDS and this year was no different. An industrial - modern kitchen showcase, fit for a home or restaurant… brilliant.

Cocoon Furnishings made an appearance this year, yay! Their showcase was hands down one of my favourites. Classic, calm with a touch of colour. Loved it!

Another repeat IDS exhibitor, Weavers Art. They did mainly grey this year.

As much as the interior design show is an design enthusiasts treat, it was also blended a little work for me. If you’ve been on the IDS Facebook page will you have seen a few shared posts from my company Juice Marketing Group. For more on how I worked the conference pop over to my business blog here.

Finally, although I didn’t get an opportunity to canvas the entire exhibit floor, it’s interesting that a few of the big names like Style at Home, ELTE and Snob didn’t make an appearance this year. Also, it seemed that kitchen & baths businesses were among the popular booths this year. Wished there was more designer showcases like we saw at IDS11.

All in all, this years IDS experience was more about the conversations and connections vs. the eye-candy… that said, a dose of pretty never hurts. So appreciative of all the great conversations I had with so many great people this year… looking forward to continuing those conversations going forward. As for IDS, I look forward to IDS14!

7 Ways To Master Winter Style

With the weather as cold as it is right now, I think it can be difficult to get motivated to look good. Without a doubt layers keep you warm but if done poorly, they can leave you looking messy.

So I was on the hunt for winter style inspiration, and after sourcing these photos... it's clearly possible to be warm and stylish in the cold winter months.

Here is my round up of 7 Ways To Master Winter Style.

Modern Interiors vs. Modern Eclectic

Is the sleek, linear and paired down accessories look of ultra modern interiors a design style of the past?

Although many décor trend reports are suggesting all styles are a go this year, I'm seeing less posts, pins and tweets of ultra modern interiors lately.

I'm seeing modern interiors with more personality these days... perhaps better named modern eclectic. I don't know, but here's what I mean...

Wonder if those who love modern design style are reconsidering or struggling with how to add in some personality without offsetting their whole décor. Interesting. My suggestion? Seek expert advice before attempting to do it yourself.

If You Love It - It Works.

Morning friends... I hope you had a fabulous weekend.

My post on home décor trends for 2013 last week was the springboard for this... enjoy!

I'm starting to learn Photoshop. I don't anticipate doing any big creative/copy designs, but uncomplicated creatives I want to learn and do more of... here's my first.

Home Décor Trends For 2013

According to the handful of blog posts and articles I've read on home décor trends for 2013, it seems this year’s trends cross all style boundaries.

Perhaps more and more people are embracing the ‘decorate the way you love’ philosophy. So many design elements and styles have been named, appealing to so many personal preferences, that this year’s limitation may be only your imagination (and, perhaps your bank account). Kuddo’s to Style at Home & Christine from Bijou & Boheme for calling it out in the January issue!

Among the many predications for home décor trends for 2013; colour, pattern, texture and all things circular seem to be the most popular call outs. Would you agree?

Here's a little round up for you...

Happy 2013!

Happy 2013 friends! I hope you had a wonderful Holiday season filled with many special moments with family and friends.

Happy 2013 via Desire to Decorate

Reflecting on 2012 makes my head spin and smile all at the same time. It was a interesting year to say the least. It started off on a low, but shortly after new opportunities began.

Starting my own company was pivotal for me, and while it was a little scary at first, it quickly become the right decision for me. Much of that stems from my personal cheerleaders championing for me, the relationships I appreciate & value from within business and finally, the relationships I've developed via the design blogging community.

I never would have thought the marriage of marketing and looking at beautiful spaces would happen, but it happens every day as I manage marketing projects and social channels for businesses with the design, textile and home décor industry. If you want on-trend marketing campaigns that generate leads through the strategic mix of social, traditional and digital marketing then connect with me here. Yes, my shameless plug, but marketing strategy + social media within the design community is my thing and I'm loving it!

I'm looking forward to a new year filled with new adventures and opportunities. I'm excited to get-going… what are you feeling good about for 2013?
