Happy Holidays!

With only a day left until Christmas, I'm taking every moment to soak up all the joy the season has to offer. Our gift shopping is complete and with just a few gifts yet to wrap, I'm so ready for good food, delicious desserts and family laughter. I can’t wait for the Christmas memory making to begin. My boys are 6 and 3, so there’s lots of festive cheer and excitement this year.

Merry Christmas everyone!! I hope you have a fabulous day with many special moments.

All my best for a happy, healthy and prosperous 2013!

Insanely Gorgeous Interior Design

If you’re in my circle of friends, you already know the talents of interior designer Meredith Heron, of Meredith Heron Design. This post is intended for my friends in the US who didn’t get a glimpse of her talents in the recent two issues of Style at Home magazine.

Meredith was ‘Puttin’ on the Ritz’ in the December issue of Style at Home magazine, showcasing a Toronto condo with classic finishes and a subdued palette. The whole thing beautiful, but my favourite? The entryway.

Love it.

Love the sheep skin over the stools… instant glamour.

Then…

… there were many of us who eagerly awaited the grand reveal of #projectkitchengorgeous, the kitchen make over of Christine from Bijou & Boheme. And, as they say, good things come to those who wait… we finally got what we were waiting for in the January issue of Style at Home.

Stunning.

And, Christine’s entryway, living room and family room were also showcased, everything…

insanely gorgeous.

Talk about pretty, right?

I love that Meredith does versatility. From classic & subtle to an eclectic Parisian peid-a-terre kitchen… she’s one insanely talented designer. To see more of Meredith’s work you really need to follow her via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram… she often shares snippets of her design projects through her social channels. I swoon… often.

Finally, I love Christine’s ‘decorate with what you love’ philosophy. She's got a great eye for mixing old and new, mid century modern with more ornate pieces and somehow it all works, perfectly.  She’s now a contributing editor with Style at Home, and want to know how you can add pink into your decor? Feel free to check out her recent appearance on the Steven and Chris Show here. To see more of Christine’s fabulous finds follow along via her blog Bijou & Boheme.

Our Winter Urn

Winter urns are hugely popular in my neighbourhood. House after house, entrances are flanked by winter urns filled with winter greens, dogwood branches, birch logs and ornaments to bring some Holiday cheer to the front entrance. It's always exciting to see the various designs.

We do a winter urn every year. It’s becoming very popular for people to buy pre-made winter urns, but, with my moms help, I’ve been making ours for years now. I enjoy the process; collecting inspiration, shopping for greens and creating it. My mom was away this year when I did ours, so this years winter urn is completely chez moi…

Winter Urn 2012 Desire to Deorate

Yup, I’m a big girl now.

I added clear mini lights last week, and I think it’s add a little something special for the evening, here’s a day & night look…

Pretty, right? I think so. Do you showcase a winter urn out front during the winter months? Feel free to pop over to my pin-board for more floral inspiration.

Winter urns – such an easy way to keep your front landscape looking current even the colder months. The beauty lies in it’s ability to last throughout the winter season -  and since the cold air acts as refrigeration, the foliage stays fresh looking until March. Perfect!

Getting Our Christmas On

I’m happy to share we’re getting our Christmas on over here. Usually our Christmas decorations start coming out just after the Toronto Santa Claus parade, but this year we only started this past week.

We purchased our Christmas tree yesterday, but we haven’t brought it in yet. We always allow it to rest in the garage, for a day, before bringing it into the house. My husband opts for gradual temperature adjustments… basically, so the tree branches don’t fall too quickly going from outside to instant heat. In any case, we’re all happy we got it and it’s likely coming indoors tonight.

Here’s a few snippets of Christmas throughout the house so far…

The Perfect Hostess Gift

The Holiday season is full of gatherings with family and friends, so I’m often on the hunt for the perfect hostess gift.

I took a stroll downtown Oakville recently, and here’s a few items I spotted as potentials…

Hosting for Holidays

Christmas coziness – there’s an image that sends waves of happiness through your body, right?

Several days off, shopping for gifts, eating delicious food, getting a little carried away with quality wine, snuggling with a loved one under a warm blanket and watching TV, knowing that you don’t have to wake up early.

For some people the picture is complete when they have dear family or friends they haven’t seen in a while stay with them during the holidays. Though it is certainly fun hanging out, remembering the good old times and resolving to meet more often in the future, it still requires some work on your part. You can’t really spend days in your pyjamas, eating only cookies with guests staying over.

Here’s a few things you need to consider before guests arrive:

Where guests will sleep. If there are a lot of guests, you may want to consider inflatable beds. Rules of etiquette suggest you offer your guests the most comfortable mattresses in the house.
Clean the house. They deserve to spend their holiday in spotless environment.
Buy
presents for your guests. It doesn’t have to be something expensive; people appreciate the gesture alone, especially if it is wrapped nicely…

Hosting for the Holidays via House & Home

via

Plan all your meals and shop before guests arrive. Prepare some meals in advance and freeze them, so that you wouldn’t be swamped on the day of celebration. Also, plan to make simple yet delicious meals. Even sandwiches can be special if you arrange them nicely, cut them in triangles the size of one bite and put colourful toothpicks on each triangle. Truthfully, no food can be bad served on a festive table like this…

Hosting for the Holidays dining via Style at Home

via

And Now, the Fun Part.
Once the tedious part of expecting guests is over, you can sit down and start planning the more exciting events: how to entertain guests and what to do when party day comes. First, plan to decorate around the house using nice ornaments…

Hosting for the Holidays via Style at Home
via

You and your guests can go through stuff you don’t need and try to come up with creative decorations using unexpected objects. You can even make a competition out of it, with the winner getting the biggest piece of cake in the evening.

After you decorate the tree, you can start making your party play list. Everyone can write 10-20 song titles to be included in the list. Each of you can have one “veto” reserved for a song on the playlist you especially dislike. Make sure there’s enough dance music for that time in the evening when everyone has drunk enough to hit the dance floor.

Some other ways you can have fun with your guests:

  • Go outside and make a snowman, or have a snowball fight
  • Play old fashion board games
  • Sing karaoke
  • or finally, sit next to the fireplace, drink wine and enjoying the company

Thanks Eva Stephen for the post!

Beauti-Tone Holiday Projects

It’s beginning to look a lot like the Holiday season and Home Hardware Stores Limited, through its Beauti-Tone Paint Division, is adding a splash of colour with decorating projects that put the focus squarely on beautiful round holiday ornaments.

“When it comes to ornaments, there is such a variety of beautiful styles and colours, they deserve to steal the show,” says Bev Bell, Creative Director, Beauti-Tone Paint and Home Products Division, Home Hardware Stores Limited.  “Sure they look great on a tree, but, with price points that can be extremely reasonable, you can easily use them to switch up your holiday colour scheme and add a dash of flare throughout your home.”

Each of these holiday projects puts the focus right where you want it – on these little round pops of colour. Go wild or stay subtle. Whatever you choose, it’s bound to be beautiful.

Holiday Centrepiece

This dramatic project is so versatile it’s the perfect place to mix and match for beautiful mantels, centerpieces, and tables. Best of all, it’s simple to make.

Home Hardware Beauti-Tone division 1 via Desire to Decorate

Decide on the length of the tray. The tray pictured is for a small table. However, the longer it is, the more impressive it looks. If you are creating a centrepiece, ideally it should be long enough to cover the usable space on your table!  Even as long as 12 feet if you’ve got the space to do it!

  1. Choose a board 5” longer and 5” wider than the desired “footprint” of your tray. (for example, 1” x 8” x the desired length or 1” x 10” x the desired length board would be ideal.)
  2. From this board cut 2-1/2” wide pieces off each long side (these will be the sides of the tray).
  3. Then cut two 2-1/2 inch pieces from the remaining board (these pieces will form the ends.) The remaining piece of board becomes the bottom of the tray. If you want a wider bottom, start with a wider piece of wood.
  4. Nail the two end pieces to the bottom piece.
  5. Trim the two side pieces to length and nail to the bottom and end pieces.
  6. Cut 2” x 2” or 1” x 1” pieces (you can use the leftover pieces from the sides) for the legs and nail into place. Sand and paint or stain as desired. Hot tip: Paint the tray in a neutral shade and so that what you put in it becomes the focal point. Great choices from Beauti-Tone’s new Simon Chang Oh Canada! Trend Colour Collection are SC061 Inukshuk or SC075 Nickel Black. Go here for more great colour ideas and inspiration.

For the Holidays, load the tray up with greens and beautiful ornaments that tie into your festive colour scheme. But, unlike your live action Rudolph or your collection of Nutcrackers, this d├ęcor piece does not have to go away in January. Change it up as the season changes. Line with pots of spring flowers or fall foliage, or you can even use it to create an edible centrepiece for a buffet table. Line the tray with plastic then wet oasis. Cover that with parsley or mint, then load it up with fresh cut vegetables or fruit speared with tooth picks. So easy, so genius!

CAN It!

Ornamental disguise. Here’s a beautiful way to camouflage gifts or package baked goods with a silver paint can sporting a bow of ornaments. Purchase empty paint cans, lids and paint can openers. Many Home Hardware stores have them in stock, or you can special order and receive them quickly. Place a bike lock or bell for a new bike, or keys to a new car into the can! Fill it with baked goods, jewellery, or tickets to a show. Heck, even socks and underwear look better in a can. Secure the lid and decorate with a colourful array of plastic ornaments attached with hot glue and embellished with ribbon. (Don’t forget to attach a paint can opener for easy access to the treasure.)

A Twist on Tradition

Style your stairway with beautifully decorated garland at the base around the spindles instead of the normal railing dressing. The result is stunning and you can actually hold onto the railing while on the stairs – functional and safe!

Table Charms

Set the mood for the evening with charming table favours crafted from Home Hardware’s selection of gorgeous hand-blown glass ornaments. Simply glue a washer to the bottom, gently remove the top, fill with water, and place a beautiful seasonal flower or delicate greens in the opening. Not naughty, just nice. (Hot tip: Don’t use plastic ornaments as the top is usually glued on.)

Fall Style {Food}

I’ve had so much fun pulling together this little Fall series. Fall Style {Interiors} showcases my love for warmth with layers and textures within a neutral space. Fall Style {Fashion} shares how I adore scarves, boots and layers again. And finally, Fall Style {Food} brings it all home.

I think Fall inspired food dishes may just do it for everyone - ladies, gents and kids alike. Fall brings on the goodness of comfort foods like, stuffed peppers, squash, casseroles and hearty soups. Oh, and the deliciousness of home-baked goods like, baked apples, apple pies, seasonal loaves, and pumpkin! All favourites here. This year, I did pumpkin bread, pumpkin pie and found a new discovery, pumpkin macaroni & cheese… heaven.

There’s so many fabulous reasons to love the Fall, there’s no wonder why it’s a favourite season for so many people… myself included.

Fall Style {Fashion}

Here’s a look at Fall Style {Fashion} from within my comfort zone. I often choose pants over skirts, and love jackets, crisp shirts, scarves, necklaces, bracelets, boots and a great handbag.

I’m happy to say my scarf collection is sizable, and I add to my shoe, handbag and jewellery collections every time I visit our place in Florida. My mom is there right now, so thankfully she’s getting in on the Black Friday deals…

Wall Murals

What do you think of wall murals as a wallcovering option? Every now and then, an interior featuring a wall mural pops up in a design magazine.

My grandparents have a mural in their upper hallway, it gives you the illusion that you’re walking into a garden. They’ve had it for as long as I can remember, I always thought it was a little tacky, but who knows, maybe they were onto something.

Almost seems as though murals are replacing art…

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween friends! We were never really big on decorating for Halloween until we had kids. Needless to say, we’re still building our Halloween decor items, and we’re all happy with the small touches of Halloween throughout the house. Picked up some spiders and webs from the dollar store, skulls from walmart and we were given some great Halloween treats courtesy of The Home Depot.

happy halloween mantel cinema

Happy Halloween via Desire to Decorate

I reused the orange shredded paper that The Home Depot package arrived for our mantel and entryway displays… and the orange mini lights were from them too. There’s a Haunted House sign outside too, but I didn’t capture of picture of it just yet.

We tackled pumpkin craving last night…  Liam chose a spider and Evan the witch, and daddy made it all happen. I tried to steer Evan for the skull cut-out but I lost, so witch it is.
Have great night friends. and try to leave some candy for the kids!

Last week I attended the Joanne Fabrics seminar at The Decorating Centre in Burlington. This session featured a line up of fabrics across a variety of books, not to mention new wallpapers and more.

Gone are the days where wallpapers fade in to the background. Today's wall coverings are bold and electric, creating instant focal points and absolutely fabulous. Although, I still adore the neutral palettes… Joanne Fabrics Wallpaper Fresco

Also impressive was the sneak peak at their new menswear inspired collection, Highlands. With touches of plaids, houndstooth and herringbone, what’s not to love? I love how this collection looks totally current by using the trendy colour palettes like grey and blue, cream and biscuit… love.
