Back to School with The Home Depot

It is hard to believe that the kids are back to school this week. Funny how the summer months always seem fly by, and here we go again with a new school year.

To welcome the start of the school year, The Home Depot presented me with the opportunity to take on a back to school DIY project. After some thought, I decided on creating a corkboard / chalkboard message centre for our mudroom. I’m thinking it will be a great place to post reminders for homework, after-school activities and birthday parties. Just another way to help us plan and stay organized throughout the school year.

Here’s what I did… Materials Needed:
  • Sheet corkboard
  • Sheet hardboard
  • MDF baseboards
  • Extra strength wood glue
  • Extra fine sanding pad
  • Painters' tape
  • White spray paint
  • Magnetic paint
  • Chalkboard paint (in black or tinted to desired color)
  • Chalk
Step 1: Cut corkboard, hardboard and MDF baseboard to size, sand edges. Lay out cut pieces of MDF around hardboard on flat working surface – and glue into place.

Step 1

Step 2: Apply the additional baseboard to enhance frame and glue. Tape the corkboard edges and prime and paint the entire work surface.

Step 2

Step 3: Tape the chalkboard area and paint with magnetic paint (following the instructions on the package for best results) and repeat with chalkboard paint (following the instructions on the package for best results). Finally, prime the chalkboard surface.

Step 3

Step 3 complete

Tada! A message centre for the whole family… let’s hope it helps! Thank you The Home Depot for a kick start into the school year. What organizing tips have you taken on to help you through the year? Do tell.
