Esty Love

Yes, I have a thing for Etsy. It's additive and I've shown great restraint but I think that's about to change.
With the cold months approaching us, B and I enjoy tea every night so I'm thinking about...

1 | 2 | 3
I'll take any of these but I have to say... looking at these makes me want to learn how to knit.

Finally, last week Shannon at What's Up Whimsy did a post on 2011 calendars and since I always buy at least one hardcopy calendar, I've been looking around... here's my pick!

I've posted about her prints before... I love how there's a nice mix between boy and girl illustrations in this calendar set. I think my boys would like them too!

the printmaker's sideboard

While I haven't really been a fan of weathered wood furniture most often seen via Restoration Hardware, I'm really liking the Printmaker's Sideboard seen in the October/November issue of Lonny Magazine and the November issue of Canadian House & Home. Here it is...

Cameron McNeil did a great job bringing this piece into a living room redesign without going over the edge with too much farmhouse modern. I really like this room... seems grown up enough for guests while friendly enough for little ones. Since I'm collecting inspiration for my own living room redesign (wanting it to be shared by adults & kids alike), elements of this room keep popping into my head.

the sideboard provides ample extra storage for linens, candles and other pretty things
the pair of velvet chairs in front of the window seem like comfy chairs for reading the latest issue of your favorite design magazine, with a cup of cofffe in hand!
the modern area rug adds a nice graphic touch but in a subtle way
the iron with marble top side tables pair nicely with the wood coffee table and sideboard
the clear glass lamps are also a 'fabulous find', check out Walmart instead of Crate & Barrel!

Check out this living room transformation via Canadian House & Home online TV, and why not check out Cameron's blog too!

Floating Shelves

Many people, including myself, have opted for floating shelves as bookshelves however, I love the idea of floating shelves inlieu of a console table or side table. When space is at a premium, floating shelves is a nice option to help keep things from looking too heavy. Here's a round up to help get your creative juices flowing...

This orange is gutsy don't you think? I love the floating shelf here... via Canadian H&H

Suzanne Dimma's entryway seen in the November issue of Canadian House & House. I love this modern classic feel. The blue zig zag rug is a nice change from the black & white we often see... also, if red is in your holiday decor, you could swap out the blue for red rug for the season!

Great use for a floating cabinet here... image via Canadian House & Home online TV, Gutsy & Glam

I think a larger art piece and something below is needed here but I like the two toned floater. via Eve Robinson Associates

This could be used to house a TV or statement piece in a living room or dining room. via icon custom furniture

Perhaps you have a bunch of old crates laying around... stack them like this, put a bench under it and you have a perfect storage & seating area for your mudroom! via houzz.

Placing the small table under this unit makes it from looking out of place... great idea! Lonny Magazine October/November.

Lastly, remember the pictures I shared with you from the Steven & Chris show - I absolutely loved the floating shelves they had behind the kitchen set... see it here if you missed it!

Delicious! Delicious! Delicious!

Pumpkin Cupcakes with Maple Frosting - it's a keeper! Simple to make and they taste heavely... next time, I would add in a little more maple syrup though ~

My little helper, Liam, and I had a great time whipping up 2 batches of these pumpkin cupcakes... all the while Liam was asking about making a vanilla cake -
"can we make a vanilla cake?"
"it looks like peanut butter!"
"who's going to have pumpkin cupcakes?"
"I don't like pumpkin"
"why are we making a vanilla cake, it's not my birthday"

All in all, we made 36 pumpkin cupcakes, 1 vanilla cake and... pulled pork!! Yes, from the Steven & Chris show... everything was delicious!!! Here's a peek of us hard-at-work...

Oh, we also bought our halloween candy and got up some indoor decorations... overall a great family weekend!

Perfect for Fall

On my 'to do' list for this weekend... make Pumpkin Cupcakes with Maple Frosting!

Found this beauty, see recipe here, and I'm in! I'm not sure what will be better, the pumpkin cupcake or the maple frosting... can't wait to find out. I'll post my version of this scrumptious cupcake on Monday... something tells me it won't look quiet as good as this one but I'll give it a try. Care to join me?

Oh, and I hope to get out the rest of our Halloween decorations, choose costumes for the boys and buy some candy too! If you're looking for last minute Halloween decorating ideas check out Jennifer's post on Speedy Decor. HappyWeekend!!

ps... don't forget, Steve & Chris today at 2pm!!

Steven & Chris, Bloggers & Me!

It all started with this...

I was so excited to have received the invitation and I was even more excited when I heard it was going to be a audience full of bloggers! So with help from B and my mom, I was able to join the group for a taping of the show, which aires Friday, October 22nd @ 2pm... I've already set my PVR!!

Here we are!! Steven & Chris, they are truly a dynamic duo, so charming and funny! Upper right picture are my blogger friends, Shannon, Jen and Staci... lower left Staci and I sat together in the front row and finally, lots of lovely ladies in the audience.

Jenny McCarthy was the special guest - she's stunning! She was talking about her new book 'Love, Lust & Faking It'... sounds like a fun read, I may just have to get it! And, check out the shoes... needless to say, she walked in very slowly!!

Here I am with the dynamic duo... so much fun! After the taping the entire audience enjoy pulled pork sandwiches (cooked in Dr Pepper) whipped up by Chef Rodney Bowers from an earlier segment in the show. It was absolutely delicious, so delish that I didn't have time to take a picture - yum! Anyway, there was also a Q & A session but I didn't stay for it because I was concerned about not being out in time for Liam's school pick up.

Finally, I have to show you the studio shots I took -- love them!! Love the tile in the kitchen and the stylish shelves but I absolutely loved the little pseudo vignettes they had around the studio.
Love the floating shelves... I'm working on a post on that so check back so you can see the round up of floating shelves I've pulled together.

This is my favorite... love the pairing of this furniture piece and the polished lamp!

Simple... love it!

The chalk board panels would be great for a busy family... I can see this in a home office.

Perfect for a design work studio.

Stylish Shelves the Steven & Chris way!

Overall, I had a great time! I enjoyed the show, had a good time reconnecting with blogger friends... unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to meet all the bloggers I intended to but there will be a next time.

Lastly, thank you to Vitania for letting Jeff know about us bloggers and thank you to Jeff for reaching out to all of us. All the staffers at the show were great - they took photo's of groups and tweeted them as they happened... I'm still thinking 'no' to twitter but it was fun! 2pm Friday folks - PVR it!

{Decorating Dilemma} Katie

Katie’s ready to tackle her dining area so she asked if I could help. Here’s what she wrote:

Hi Wendy! I recently found your blog and I love your style! I am looking for a little help.....not quite a full design board, but help finding the perfect dining table and chairs. We have a open great room and just one eating area, so it has to work for casual family dinners and having people over. I am looking for something rectangle, about 72ish inches long, good quality (2 young kids), or already distressed. I go back and forth on color, I was thinking espresso, but I like some of these newer whitewashed looking tones or grey tones. 2 tables that I keep going back to are a modern country table that has a X base on the bottom, and a Vivaterra X base table in a grey (can't seem to find a Canadian substitute). For chairs...I was planning on doing a brown leather parsons chair, but if I do a brown table it just seems too boring. I would love a little more contrast from the table. We would love some sort of upholstered chairs.....but they need to be able to be wiped off. Last time I visited a furniture store about the modern country table she said that it was possible to do it in a distressed cream.....so that's a possibility too. So....given all that info....what do you think? Could you come up with something? Thanks so much! Katie

Here are the simplified design boards I provided...

Option 1
This board is meant to represent a modern farmhouse look. The table in the middle is meant to showcase the natural wood while the table in the upper right corner is 'the' table to consider because it extends to accommodate 10 people. The chair in the lower right hand corner represents a stackable chair option for get-together.

Option 2
Here's an example of an 'X' table. A designer friend of mine had it custom made for a client of hers. Two chair options work well here, either faux leather chairs or sisal chairs depending on the how casual or formal she wants the overall look.

Option 3
#3 is the charm! This is the board Katie likes the best. This option offers a more formal look for the space. The nail head faux leather cream chairs paired with the double pedestal table will definitely be attractive. The table extends to 104" so it would certainly fit 10 people comfortably. *Given this dining area is part of a greatroom, an area rug will help define the space. I've chosen neutral colours not to complete with the existing familyroom area rug.

If you would like to love walking through your front door, it would be my pleasure to help, contact me for my decorating services.

Pumpkins!!

It's a beautiful fall day so I snapped a photo of my fall arrangement out front. We haven't got to decorating the pumpkins yet but soon... promise. We've named the big scarecrow Bob, he's been around for a few years now. I'm not sure when having multiple pumpkins became the trend but I'm really loving the white 'ghost' pumpkin this year! Our biggest challenge is keeping Evan from throwing the little pumpkins... thinking their balls or 'ba' as he calls it.

I also tried to get a 'smile at the camera' picture of the boys but had no such luck... here's just a few shots of my failed attempts.

Adore Home Magazine

Thanks to a few Aussie bloggers, I found a new online magazine!!! Adore Home Magazine, an Australian online home and lifestyle magazine has launched its first issue - see it here. If you don't mind the flip-flop of seasons, Adore Home is yet another dose of beautiful spaces from around the globe. Oh, and its free so subscribe and be in the know for the next issue. Here's a glimpse...

I love how the yellow in the area rug is picked up in the fireplace mantel and mirror in the adjoining room! The rug reminds me of this rug I love from The Rug Company - Handmade.

Love the pop of colour with the blue chairs!

I know you've seen this interior before :)

Pretty in pink, greens and blues... home of Caitlin Wilson. She has a blog, Caitlin Wilson Design Style Files, check her out!

Happy Weekend all!!
PS... It's our wedding anniversary on Saturday and I'm so excited about having a date night!!

Style Spotlight | Symmetry

I’m completely drawn to symmetry. I think there's a overall calming effect while keeping things balanced and orderly. Some argue that symmetry can look boring and characterless but I think otherwise.

I like that the main items are symmetrical however, there's a mix in accessories... via Amanda Nisbet

I love the furniture layout... via H&H Sept 2008

What's you preference... symmetrical or asymmetrical?Hmmm... perhaps this is why I struggled with creating our picture gallery wall, read it here. Fortunatelyhere.
